Why Do People of Asian Descent Get Double-Lid Surgery?
Many people of Asian descent – especially those of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean descent – do not have a visible crease in their eyelid just above their upper lash line. When they are unhappy with this feature and would like to make a change, they come in for an aesthetic plastic-surgery procedure called double-lid surgery.
Why Do People of Asian Descent Get Double-Lid Surgery?
Double-eyelid surgery has been getting more and more popular recently. It is performed to give the face a more energized and rejuvenated appearance.
The procedure divides the upper eyelid into two segments. This makes the eyes look more open and alert and less puffy and tired.
People who undergo this surgery may also find that makeup application is easier. When Dr. Chow creates a crease, it allows for more space for eyeshadow and other products.
The Double-Eyelid Procedure with Dr. Chow
On the day of your procedure, Dr. Chow will measure and use a pen to mark the best place on your upper eyelid for a natural-looking crease. You’ll then be given local anesthesia to completely numb the area. You will be sedated to make you feel relaxed and comfortable.
Dr. Chow will then perform one of the following techniques:
- Open technique: An incision is made parallel to the lash line, just above the desired crease. A crescent-shaped strip of skin and excess fat is removed, and the skin is stitched back together to create the crease.
- Suture technique: A series of three to six small punctures is made in the skin for sutures. These then are attached to the tissues below to make a crease. The sutures are hidden underneath the skin and left permanently.
How Long Will My Results Last?
The results of a double-lid surgery vary from patient to patient. However, you won’t have to worry about maintenance or much upkeep, because the results can last for a few decades.
Recovery Following Asian Double-Eyelid Surgery
You will need to arrange for someone to drive you home after the surgery, since you will not safely be able to drive right after the procedure. Healing can take as little as two to three days but can easily take as long as a week if bruising occurs. The incision and tissue manipulation involved in the surgery creates bruising and swelling in the region.
Most patients’ healing time is a minimum of seven days, but if the surgery is paired with a brow lift, it may take a little longer. A brow lift can address sagging skin in the forehead and brow area. Most patients are back to normal activity within two to four days.
