How Do I Know If a Facelift Is Right for Me?
A facelift, also known as a rhytidectomy, is a cosmetic procedure that involves making a patient’s face look younger. The procedure achieves this by eliminating sagging folds of skin on the jawline and cheeks. This sagging occurs naturally with age.
Typically, what happens in a facelift is that a flap of skin is pulled back on each side of the face. Then the tissues underneath are adjusted surgically to deliver a more youthful shape. Finally, excess skin is removed and the flaps are sutured.
Are You a Good Candidate for a Facelift?
You’re probably wondering if you qualify as a suitable candidate for a facelift. If you meet the following conditions, you are most likely a good candidate for this procedure.
The candidate must be someone who demonstrates the typical signs of aging and at the same time retains some of their skin’s elasticity. This typically includes anyone from their 40s to 70s. There are occasional instances where older individuals tend to get a facelift done, but in general, older patients go for smaller procedures.
It is very important to focus on mental and physical health. It is also necessary to have realistic expectations. A facelift will not change anything drastically. You cannot look completely different from what you look like at present. Always remember that the objective is an improved look.
What Is the Procedure Like?
Since a facelift is a surgical pressure, it has to be done under anesthesia. Some patients get local anesthesia with sedation, while others opt for general anesthesia.
In general, facelifts involve raising the skin and then tightening the tissues under it. The fat present in the face and neck is usually sculpted, redistributed, or removed. The facial skin is then redraped over the repositioned contours.
There are several approaches that we can use to achieve your desired results. The most common one is the traditional facelift. Here, the incisions begin at the temples near the hairline. They progress downwards, all the way from the front of one ear to the back of the other ear.
Post-Procedure Expectations
Once a facelift is carried out, you may experience some amount of pain, bruising, numbing, and swelling. You will be provided with specialized bandages for the incisions. These bandages will reduce the intensity of bruising or swelling. A tiny tube may be placed under the skin to drain out excess fluids.
For the first few days after the procedure, you will be asked to do the following:
- Sleep with your head in an elevated position.
- Take pain medication to address discomfort.
- Apply cold compresses on the operated areas to reduce any swelling or discomfort.
Make sure you’re paying attention in terms of self-care as well. Intense or heavy-duty activities must be avoided for a time. Also, it is important to avoid heavy sun exposure, especially if it’s already very hot out. Makeup must be avoided as well.
