Happy, Healthy Mother’s Day!
Mother’s Day is right around the corner, and we all can’t help but think of our mothers as the holiday approaches. When I was younger, my mom always used to give me advice, but (of course!) I never listened.
Now that I am older, I have realized that many of the things she told me were true! So in the spirit of Mother’s Day, here is some beauty advice from my dear mother that I have found to be the most useful.
Take care of your neck and hands. So often we overlook these two essential parts of our body. We take great care to prevent anti-aging on our face, but often forget our hands and neck, which are also two very distinct indicators of aging. In addition to the face, the neck and hands are exposed to the elements and eyes everywhere! By the time you realize the signs of aging, prevention can’t help. So when you are moisturizing and putting on sunscreen, be sure you also cover those two important parts of your body!
Don’t over tweeze! During my high school and junior high years, I went through a phase where I wanted pencil thin eyebrows. My mom used to always lecture me to stop tweezing them because she insisted that one day they wouldn’t grow back. Of course I didn’t listen to her, but she did make me stop tweezing them, and thank goodness! I am now grateful for my more natural eyebrows, and yet I still wish they were even thicker!
Wear sunscreen. I think this was probably the most important advice that I learned from my mother. Since my mother was Asian, and she prized untanned skin, she was very averse to the sun. She taught me to always wear sunscreen and stay out of the sun. While getting some sun is necessary for all of us, wearing sunscreen on a daily basis and avoiding sunburns are some of the most effective ways to keeping your skin looking healthy and youthful. And don’t forget that a major cause of skin cancer is sun exposure (and tanning)! According to the American Academy of Dermatology, “more than 3.5 million skin cancers in more than 2 million people are diagnosed in the United States annually.” So heed the advice and slather on the sunscreen!
